The Phillip Island Index of Performance Award (the PIIP Award) was instituted in 2003 to reward a driver's personal performance, independent of the innate performance of their car. It is dependent on the driver’s skill and performance, not the outright performance of the car.

The PIIP Award is based on performance in all races at all meetings of the Wurth MG Road Racing Championship conducted at Phillip Island during each racing year.

In 2003 and 2004 the formulae on which this award was based involved a calculation of driver's performance relative to the power-to-weight ratio of their car. In 2005 the basis was altered and competitors were assigned a Target Time and their improvement (or otherwise) relative to this Target Time calculated from their fastest lap times in each of the two Phillip Island rounds, with the best relative improvement in performance the winner.

Your comments regarding the rationale are welcome: the Keeper of the Score is David Mottram who can be contacted on 95341426 ah or dmottram@mgs.vic.edu.au.
